El Moro, a beloved 90-year-old Mexican chain, has finally made its way to Los Angeles, and it's already a hit. As someone who's lived in LA for a decade, I've tried my fair share of Mexican restaurants, but El Moro stands out for its dedication to the perfect churro. Since opening its doors in Echo Park in January, locals have been flocking to try this Mexico City transplant. And it's no wonder - El Moro's churros are a masterpiece. Each bite is perfectly crispy, deep-fried, and coated in a generous amount of cinnamon sugar. What makes them even better? The five dipping sauces, including the classic chocolate made with real cacao from Tabasco, which is a secret ingredient in all their chocolate products. But my favorite dessert is the consuelo, a short, stout, sweet sandwich with ice cream between two warm, crunchy churro cookies. The seasonal mango ice cream was a delightful sweet-and-tart treat, and it paired perfectly with the churro sandwich. As for the churros themselves, they're sold individually and in bunches of four or 12, making them a perfect snack to share with friends. I've braved the line multiple times, and while it can be long, the counter service is efficient, and I've never waited more than 15 minutes. What's fascinating about El Moro's success in LA is how it caters to the local audience. During baseball season, they celebrate the Dodgers with blue churros coated in sparkling blue sugar, which is a clever way to connect with the city's love for the sport. El Moro's journey began as a street cart in 1935 and has since expanded to 17 locations in Mexico City, including an exceptional restaurant in the airport. The Echo Park location is only the second El Moro within the United States, with the first being in Costa Mesa, California. This churrería is largely the same in the US as it is in Mexico, with some slight adjustments to cater to its new hometown audience. El Moro has quickly made a name for itself in the city of celebrities, and it's not hard to see why. With its perfect churros, unique menu, and efficient service, El Moro is a must-visit for anyone in LA looking for a delicious dessert experience.
